Chemicals
The economy in Manville and across New Jersey has been heavily reliant on the chemical industry for decades. Major companies such as DuPont Chemical have had large factories and laboratories in the state since the 1940s.
Asbestos has a strong resistance to most chemical reactions, as well as excellent electrical and heat resistance, so it was used for years in the production of many chemicals. Two of the most dangerous types of asbestos – amosite and crocidolite – were used often in the chemical industry because they were resistant to corrosive substances.
In addition to DuPont, other large chemical companies that exposed workers to deadly asbestos were Toms River Chemical Corporation, Tennaco Chemical Company, and the Mutual Chemical Company of America in New Jersey. (mesothelioma.com)

Shipbuilding
One of the reasons that asbestos came to be used so often in shipbuilding was when a cruise ship fire happened off the coast of New Jersey in the 1930s. Since that time, shipyards all over America and in New Jersey used asbestos to build ocean-going vessels. Some of the shipbuilders in the state include New York Shipbuilding and Todd Shipyard.
Oil Refineries
Manville and towns around it are home to many oil refineries, which were frequent users of asbestos because of the danger of fires with handling petroleum. Manville and New Jersey Asbestos Lawsuits
Former workers at New Jersey-based Johns Manville, National Gypsum, and other large asbestos companies were often exposed to asbestos. That is why many mesothelioma lawsuits have been filed by former New Jersey workers.
For example, a judge in New Brunswick awarded $90 million to 11 families from Manville in July 2014. Several workers who developed asbestos lung cancer never worked at a John Manville plant but had family members who did. It is likely there were several lawsuits for secondary asbestos exposure among these families.
The financial awards ranged from $4 million to $15 million. The families involved in the mesothelioma lawsuit settlement in Manville received funds from Anova Holding AG and Becon AG, two companies in Switzerland that provided asbestos to Johns Manville between 1950 and 1980.
Further, in 1982, Johns Manville and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company paid $15 million to 680 former workers of the Raybestos-Manhattan Company, based in Passaic. Most of the workers had asbestosis, which is another disease caused only by asbestos exposure.
